When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step back from royal life, they also decided to move to North America. After a brief stint in Canada, they moved to California.

Their intercontinental move enticed international press coverage: The couple, after all, was leaving Europe, with all its heritage and hierarchies, for a place where birthright is generally irrelevant. But while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may be the highest profile decampment, they are far from the first blue bloods to do so.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Some have since moved back, while others, it seems, are here to stay. Below, a detailed list of royals who have come to America.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle traded Windsor, England, for a home high in the hills of Montecito, California. “They were both drawn to the smaller town of Santa Barbara, where they can integrate into the community while having some distance and privacy,” a source close to the couple told Vogue. Montecito’s proximity to Los Angeles ended up being important: weeks after their move, they announced a programming deal with Netflix.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden

After a broken engagement, Princess Madeleine left Sweden to live, and work, in New York City. It’s there where she met her now-husband, banker Christopher O’Neill. After several years bouncing around from New York, to London, to Stockholm, the couple announced they were permanently relocating to Florida.“The time and opportunity for the United States is good for the family when the children are still in preschool age,” the Swedish royal court said in a press release.

Princess Beatrice of York

Prince Harry’s cousin moved to New York in 2015 and quickly became part of the city’s glamorous social set. She’s been spotted with Karlie Kloss, David Geffen, and Misha Nonoo, to name a few. It’s now said she splits her time between the Big Apple and London – although she’s been spending lockdown back in the United Kingdom. (In July, she wed Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi at Windsor Castle.)

Princess Eugenie of York

Although now back in London, Princess Eugenie lived in New York from 2013 to 2015. The Princess made the most of her brief stint in the city. She worked for art auction house Paddle8, lived downtown, and favoured restaurants like Gemma and ABC Kitchen.

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway

In 2004, the fourth-in-line to the Norwegian throne moved to New York City with her then-husband Ari Behn. They divorced in 2017, and Behn passed away in 2019. Currently, she’s dating an American shaman, and has spent time in Los Angeles and the Hamptons. However, during lockdown, she’s been Instagramming from her home country of Norway.
