Canales makes his debut as a scorer in Liga MX against Chivas de Hierro: “He has proven to have hierarchy”

Sergio Canales celebrates one of his two goals against Chivas.

Sergio Canales, little by little, is beginning to leave his mark on Liga MX. The former Real Betis player, signed this summer for 10 million euros, had already left his mark, with two goals against Tigres and LAFC, in the Leagues Cup.

Last night he had his debut as a scorer in the League. The 32-year-old Spanish international led Monterrey’s victory (1-2) against Chivas … to the misfortune of Fernando Hierro and Veljko Paunovic, sports director and coach of the Guadalajara team, respectively.

Canales, who scored a double, opened the way to victory in the 10th minute. He received a drop shot from Rogelio Funes Mori in the ‘crown’ of the large area and scored with a tight shot, right-footed, against the post. The former racing, Real Madrid, Valencia and Real Sociedad player widened the gap in the 35th minute by converting, this time with his left foot, his good leg, a penalty. Ricardo Marín, in the 65th minute, pulled one back for Chivas, but it was insufficient.

At the end of the match, ‘El Tano’ Ortiz once again praised Canales’ great role: “I don’t like to talk about proper names, but Sergio has shown that he has a hierarchy.”

The former Betis player was also elected ‘MVP’ of the match.
